What Are Vapor Condensers?
Vapor condensers are designed to cool vapors until they condense back into liquid form. This process takes place in a heat exchanger, where vapors come into contact with a cooler surface, such as a tube or series of tubes. The cooler surface extracts heat from the vapor, causing it to condense into a liquid.
The condensed liquid is collected separately, while any remaining vapor can be released into the atmosphere or redirected into the process for reuse.

Types of Vapor Condensers
Purple Heat Exchangers offers a variety of vapor condensers designed to meet the specific needs of diverse industries. Below are the most common types of shell-and-tube vapor condensers and their applications:
Solvent Recovery Condensers
These condensers play a key role in solvent recovery systems by condensing vapors to reclaim valuable solvents or safely dispose of them. Operating under both vacuum and pressure conditions, they efficiently manage emissions while supporting solvent reuse and environmental compliance.
Reflux Condensers
Reflux condensers are essential in reflux systems, condensing rising vapors and returning the liquid condensate back into the process. Typically mounted on tank or reactor vents, they enhance process efficiency and control. Available as stand-alone units, they can be installed vertically or horizontally to suit specific applications.
Knock-Back Condensers / Cold Trap Condensers
Designed as vertical U-tube units with removable tube bundles, these condensers capture and condense vapors by cooling them against chilled surfaces. Condensate drains efficiently from the shell, with optional extended shell sections for better condensate collection.
Pharmaceutical Condensers
In pharmaceutical processes, these condensers ensure the purity of product streams with polished surfaces and sanitary tri-clamp connections adhering to ASME-BPE standards. Available in single or double tube sheet designs, they maintain hygiene and prevent cross-contamination, with materials such as 304L and 316L stainless steel or Hastelloy.
Terpene & Oil Condensers
For essential oils and CBD production, these condensers maintain product quality and safety under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. Built with a focus on sanitary design and ASME certifications, they deliver high-purity extracts with reliable performance.
Emissions Abatement Condensers
Designed to reduce environmental impact, these condensers capture and condense volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous vapors. By transitioning gases to liquid form for safe disposal or recycling, they ensure compliance with environmental regulations and improve air quality.
Vacuum System Condensers
Vacuum condensers maintain efficient vacuum conditions by removing condensable vapors, protecting vacuum pumps from damage, and reducing energy consumption. These condensers stabilise vacuum levels for precise pressure control, critical for processes like chemical reactions and material processing.
Additional Design Features
Enhance your vapor condenser with a range of optional features:
- Electropolished tube-side surfaces for superior cleanliness.
- Passivation of tube-side surfaces to maintain material integrity.
- Sight glasses and level gauge ports for monitoring.
- CIP spray ball assemblies for seamless cleaning.
- Condensate collection sumps or chambers for efficient liquid handling.
